Education Fund
Our Education Fund was established to promote education through registered Canadian charities or other outreach programs for the purpose of education. This year we are supporting Give Girls A Chance (www.givegirlsachance.org).
Give Girls A Chance is unique in that it identifies grassroots educational programs for girls, and champions these programs. Monies from Give Girls A Chance support a wide-range of projects from schooling for girls in orphanages in Africa to helping teenage mothers in Canada continue their education.
Each member of our group contributes $20 to our Education Fund at the beginning of the year. We then do further fundraising with our book sales and gift basket raffles.
Our 18th Annual Battle of the Books will be held in April, 2011
CFUW Markham/Unionville is proud to sponsor this unique educational event with Public and Separate Schools participating together in friendly competition. In partnership with the Markham Public Library System and Teacher Librarians, we invite all grade 4,5,and 6 students to form playing teams, first at their school level, and then in our Community Final. Winning schools are presented with a plaque and substantial book donations. Winning teams receive medals as well as books, while all participants receive a ribbon and at least one book.
